Broadcast 1 - Project Kick off

Hello, thank you for taking the time to read my dev blog. This last month I've spend some time working through various prototypes for different game projects. I wanted to try out different ideas and see what I could come up with and which one I naturally wanted to work on the most.

This process was great because it allowed me to experiment and find different ways of doing things and got me familiar with unity 3d again. I haven't worked on my own game project let alone tried to develop a full game in almost 4 years. I still do art here and there but programming has never been a strong skill of mine.

During my various prototypes I landed on a endless runner style concept that's similar to something I made before. This time around i'd like to really push the boundaries of what i'm capable of and try to really make something that I'm excited to play.

I was inspired by this game called Powder , and reached out to Dave Chenell to ask some questions on how they built their game. I went a different direction with the structure but generally kept a the similar concept.

I'm hoping to have a general movement prototype out soon and playable and get a few people onboard to test it out and help stress test some of the general difficulty and controls. I'm hoping to do this at a monthly rate as I add new elements to the game.

I've also been keeping a general list of what I've been doing per release, so I can continually see my progress and track what has been done.

I don't have my first release ready, I need to work on a few items to increase the difficulty and feel and pull out a few elements that are still just some ideas. I'll also be keeping track of progress and showing images and videos on my instagram account. I might even open up my trello planning board to the public so everyone can follow along with the development.

Development Notes

  • Removed Snap on player movement to allow a smoother transition on the left and right movement.
  • Abstracted out a board so it allows modifiers for the jump speed and left / right movement speed.
  • Increased players speed over time.
  • Basic score menu while playing the game.
  • Game over menu after the player collides with something.
  • Detection of collisions on the player when they run into an obstacle.
  • Added collectible coins.
  • Added unique collision objects of various sizes.
  • Added main menu to the game.
  • Added some ramp and tile assets from blender.
  • Added highscore tracking and displayed it on the main menu.
  • Started to work through a trigger that would give the user some air when they hit a jump, still work to be done on this front.
